Three Things You CAN Do
3 Things You Can Do
Jesus said of Mary, “She
has done what she could.” (Mark 14:8)
No one is expected to do what they cannot but everyone is expected to do
what they can. Jesus affirms this truth,
making sure there is something for everyone to do while ensuring everyone can
do something.
(1 Corinthians 12:4-6) teaches
there are “diversities of gifts”, “differences of ministries”, “diversities
of activities”, “but it is the same God who works all in
all.” God works through the
gifts He has given, through the activities of ministries. God desires consistent faithfulness, knowing consistent
faithfulness produces consistent obedience.
We ought to simply do
what we can.
Certainly there are Christian
duties. Disciples must study God’s word,
speak to our Lord in prayer, devote ourselves to worship and praise. These are common
responsibilities. No one can shirk these
duties and please God. We must be committed to faithful obedience in these.
The question then is, “Beyond
these, what can we do?”
Consider the following
three:
1. Be humbly willing to do the little things. (Romans 12:3)
All great accomplishments
consist of a series of little things.
Open your eyes and your heart, be surprised at the value of a smile, an
encouraging word, a handshake, a hug.
You may change a life with a smile and the life you change may be your
own.
2. Be loving (Romans 12:9, 1 Corinthians 13)
Genuine love serves, dissolves
barriers, overcomes obstacles, rises above prejudice. Genuine love flows into us from God and
through us to a world in need of genuine love.
Love transforms all it touches.
3. Be merciful. (Romans 12:8, Matthew 5:7)
Jesus teaches the
necessity of mercy. We all share the
need for mercy. Mercy looks at others
through the lens of grace and love, enabling forgiveness, empowering
restoration, ensuring that relationships are healed. Mercy rejects vengeance and chooses peace.
Jesus knew that Mary’s
example would be followed, in merciful, loving, humility, remembered by those
doing what they can.
