How do I know that the Holy Spirit dwells in me?
Christians often ask, “How do I
know that the Holy Spirit dwells in me?”
The initial answer to this
question is simple: all things within Christianity are known by faith. Indeed,
we walk by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7). The very nature of God’s
design for the Christian life is for it to be based on trust. Jesus said the
Holy Spirit comes to dwell in us when we are born again (John 3:3-8). Paul adds
that our awareness of that indwelling, by which Christ dwells within our
hearts, is by faith (Ephesians 3:16-17). It is not known by physical proof, but
rather through the spiritual certainty of faith.
Still, we often seek evidence of
His indwelling—and such evidence is available. As Christ explained in John 3,
the wind cannot be seen, but we can see its effects. Similarly, while we cannot
physically see the Spirit dwelling in us, we can certainly see the evidence of
His presence.
Paul provides insight into this
evidence in Galatians 5:16-25. He explains that the Christian is the fruit (notably,
the word “fruit” is singular in the Greek text) of the Spirit. The newborn
Christian is the spiritual offspring of the Holy Spirit. As His offspring, the
Christian begins to bear His characteristics. Just like the invisible wind
moves the branches of a tree, the indwelling of the Spirit—working in
conjunction with the teachings of Jesus and His apostles—results in transformed
human behavior.
Paul describes these behaviors as
“love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness,
self-control.”
So, it is beautifully simple. If
you are a born-again Christian who is filled with love, if you have a joyful
heart, if you are at peace, and if you practice patience, kindness, and
self-control, then the Holy Spirit is actively working in you. If these traits
are missing, you may have temporarily quenched the Spirit (1 Thessalonians
5:19).
